Digital Nomad Residency in Kazakhstan

Joint Order of the Minister of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 6, 2025, № 1/NK and the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated January 6, 2025, № 7.

On the launch and implementation of the pilot project “Digital Nomad Residency” for the provision of public services “Issuance of permanent residence permits to foreigners and stateless persons in the Republic of Kazakhstan” for specialists in the field of information and communication services.

Digital Nomad Residency is a pilot project for obtaining a residence permit (RP) for IT specialists in high-demand specializations online, without having to visit Kazakhstan.

Digital Nomad Residency in Kazakhstan

List of required documents

  • A copy of passport, valid for more than 180 calendar days from the date of application.
  • A portfolio of your IT work.
  • Copies of professional development certificates and educational diplomas with apostille/legalization.
  • One color photo, 3.5-4.5 mm.
  • Foreign citizen’s CV. It is important to include information about higher education, specialized courses, and work experience, with details about companies and years.
  • Cover letter (English, Kazakh, Russian) in free form. We will provide a sample.
  • Certificate of no criminal record with an apostille/legalization mark. If the applicant has dual citizenship, a certificate is required from both countries.

ALGORITHM OF ACTIONS

Phase 1. Application to Astana Hub

  • Obtaining an IIN and EDS at foreign institutions in Kazakhstan
  • Submitting an application on the Astana Hub portal.
  • Document verification and approval within 2 business days.
  • Online interview within 5 business days.
  • Issuance of the Astana Hub application within 5-10 business days.

Phase 2. Preliminary approval

  • Submission of an electronic application. In addition to the above documents, the following    must be submitted: Astana Hub application, state duty payment, application form.
  • Review and decision issuance takes 45 calendar days, as in usual Residence Permit procedure.

Phase 3. Arrival in Kazakhstan

  • After a positive decision is issued, a notification with a validity period of 30 calendar days is issued. Upon arrival in Kazakhstan, the applicant additionally undergoes fingerprint registration, a medical examination, and provides a housing contract. If a foreign citizen does not arrive in Kazakhstan within 30 days after the decision is issued, the application is canceled, and the applicant cannot apply for a new residence permit for 12 calendar months.
  • Submission of documents to the Public Service Center.
  • Issuance of a residence permit and registration for permanent residence.

How long does the process take?

The process takes an average of 3 months. Much will depend on how quickly the applicant submits the documents.

Can family members obtain a similar residence permit?

Family members can obtain a C2 family reunification visa, which grants them the right to work. The visa is issued for one year with the possibility of annual renewal. It is not possible to obtain a residence permit under the Digital Nomad programme, but it is possible to obtain one through the standard procedure.

How long is a residence permit issued under the Digital Nomad Residency programme valid for?

A residence permit is issued for a period of up to 10 years or less if the passport expires earlier.
